The Tasmanian Institute of Agricultural Research (TIAR) is a joint venture between the University of Tasmania (UTas) and the Tasmanian Department of Primary Industries and Water (DPIW).
Working closely with industry, the Institute
undertakes research and development programs designed to
address agricultural productivity, safe food production,
social and natural resource management issues.
10th Anniversary Celebration
In 2006, UTas and DPIW celebrated the 10th Anniversary
of the joint venture which created TIAR. The highly successful
partnership has seen the Institute grow from an initial
investment of $5 million, to around $15 million per annum
in 2006.

SMART Farming MOU
In December 2006, UTas and DPIW signed a Memorandum of Understanding under the Tasmanian Government’s SMART Farming Initiative.
The Initiative will create centres of
excellence for dairy and vegetables within TIAR, by transferring
the Forthside (vegetable) and Elliott (dairy) Research
and Demonstration farms and their associated
human, physical
and financial resources to the joint venture. In addition,
a further $6 million over four years will be provided by
DPIW, for capital and research development in the TIAR
dairy and vegetable programs.
