Vegetable research

The vegetable industry is an important component of the rural sector in Tasmania. Processing & fresh vegetables have a farm gate value of some $118 million and $39 million respectively.

The main vegetables grown are potato, carrot, onion, broccoli, green pea, green bean and cauliflower. The processing potato industry in Tasmania makes up around 70% of the value of all vegetable production in Tasmania and accounts for almost 25% of potato production in Australia.

The vegetable program at TIAR conducts research into agronomy, physiology and pathology of vegetable crops, with the aim of developing more cost-effective and sustainable means of production.
